So many people show up for a golf lesson with the borrowed or out of date golf equipment. Golf professionals are invested in their student’s improvement and golf goals but can’t get the right results from students who are using the wrong equipment for them. People with unmatched equipment many times will drop the game because they find themselves too frustrated to continue. Many borrowed or outdated golf clubs have heavy irons that don’t allow consistent shot-making for the new players characteristics. The shafts are sometimes too stiff so ball flights will be low even on good swings. It is very important to have properly fitted equipment and most players after just a few swings with matched equipment will see their balls flying higher and further then before. They will be relieved that their ability was not as bad as they thought. Good equipment can bring down their scores and add confidence to their overall abilities.

Why Is a Club Fitting Important?

Because fitting is the No. 1 fundamental for providing consistency throughout a set of clubs. Some golfers produce a workable set of clubs through mixing and matching. At the expense of considerable time and perseverance, they hit many different clubs, always looking for a certain feel or trajectory. Playing with clubs that fit your body type, swing speed and skill level will greatly increase your performance. Technology has played a big role and has changed equipment design greatly over the years to produce more distance, feel, and consistency.

Who Should Get a Club Fitting?

Having clubs that properly fit your swing can help correct a flaw or poor ball flight without changing your swing. Playing with the right clubs will have an immediate and profound impact on your scoring ability. As a new golfer, it is not necessary to buy a set of clubs right away. Most golf instructors will provide clubs suited for beginners with your lessons. Once you decide you like the game you can get fitted for clubs for your very first set. If you are a seasoned golfer it is beneficial to get periodic fittings as new club technology can improve your game and enjoyment.

When to Get a Club Fitting

Hitting your friend’s new equipment is very common and a great way to see what’s new on the market. Accomplished golfers may look at segments of their game to improve their overall game. Every person has a unique swing, so it’s important to have clubs that are properly designed for your body and style of play. You can find the right clubs by going through a club fitting appointment, a process where a trained fitter will develop a set of clubs perfectly matched to your swing. A properly fitted club will complement your swing, ensure consistency, and can improve any golfer’s play in terms of distance and score. Every golfer can benefit from checking their equipment on an annual basis.

What Happens at a Club Fitting

Learning the game using poorly fit equipment is a huge hindrance to both improvement and enjoyment. Some golfers believe they have to get to a certain level to get fit, but that’s a wrong perception. So make an appointment and come ready to swing. A golf professional will run through a checklist of needs to see how your equipment measures up to current products on the market. They will compare different brands and look at components as you swing and strike the ball. In the testing process, they focus on which clubs are most appealing on the basis of look, feel, and, most importantly, performance. After the manufacturer and club model have been selected, the golf professional will to assess different fitting variables, including shaft length, shaft composition, shaft flex, grip size, the grip composition, head design, set composition, the proper loft and lie angle, etc. Your input in this process plays an important role to achieve a good fit for your future game. Your desires matter through the process, so find someone you feel comfortable to tell what is important to you. If you have a budget be sure and tell your club fitter at the beginning of the session.
